ILS Legacy System Requirements for Network Installations

Updated March 7, 2023

Each Physical or Virtual Workstation

  • A version of Windows currently supported by Microsoft
  • Minimum of 2GB of hard drive space
  • Operating system’s minimum RAM (memory) requirement
  • Microsoft® .NET Framework 4.7.2 or later
  • A version of Microsoft Word currently supported by Microsoft†
  • HotDocs 11 Player version 2.1 or later (HotDocs 11 Player version 2.8 will be installed along with InterActive LegalSuite unless already on the workstation)*
  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 9 or later**

† Corel WordPerfect X5, X6, and X7 are supported word processors, provided that Microsoft Word is also installed on the same workstation. If WordPerfect is the primary word processor, please see ILS Legacy & Corel WordPerfect.

*HotDocs, an integral part of InterActive LegalSuite, will not work with some Click-to-Run or streaming versions of Microsoft Word. Word must be locally installed onto the workstation.

** Internet Explorer 9 or later, or Microsoft Edge 14 or later is required to view Help within InterActive LegalSuite HotDocs Interviews.

Server

  • A version of Windows Server currently supported by Microsoft or NAS on the same local network.
  • Minimum of 2GB of hard drive space
  • Operating system’s minimum memory (RAM) requirement
  • Read, Write, and Modify NTFS permissions to the installation location (for each ILS user)

InterActive LegalSuite and File Synchronization Software

InterActive LegalSuite cannot be installed directly to a synchronized location such as a Dropbox folder.  However, assembled documents that are created using InterActive LegalSuite can be saved to a location recognized by file synchronization software, such as Dropbox, Box, OneDrive, etc.

Accessing InterActive LegalSuite from Multiple Locations

Single Server Installation

If the firm wishes to share their client, matter, and document database among multiple offices, they must install InterActive LegalSuite in a single location and arrange for a supported method of remote access for users in other offices. InterActive LegalSuite is compatible with all commercial software that allows a user to access a workstation or server remotely.

Remote access to InterActive LegalSuite is supported using the recommended access methods listed below:

  • Microsoft Terminal Services (with or without RemoteApp)
  • Microsoft Remote Desktop (RDP)
  • Citrix® (with or without Xenapp)
  • Any hosted desktop that meets the minimum system requirements listed on page 1.

Starting the program via UNC Path or drive-mapped share in another location across a WAN, VPN or MPLS connection is not supported, due to the risk of data corruption potentially caused by brief or extended loss of network connectivity.

For document assembly, each user must have access to a supported version of Microsoft Word and HotDocs Player within their user environment.

For Citrix Users Only

Citrix access to ILS, on a network installation, can be achieved in one of two ways:

  1. Published out with the Citrix Access Management Console
  2. Treated as a client by running the “Configure ILS Workstation” program that is located in the installation folder (from the Citrix server).

All Citrix servers using Load Manager (for load balancing) must belong to the same Active Directory domain. If a domain local group is assigned to an application, it must be in the common primary domain of all load-balanced servers.

Multiple Server Installation

If the firm prefers that each office maintain its own, separate client, matter, and document database individually, a separate copy of InterActive LegalSuite must be purchased and installed for each office location.
