Webinar Description
Many estate planners spend years designing plans for clients and revising them as laws change, without seeing how those plans ultimately work in practice. Once a client dies and planning gives way to administration, the planner has to figure out how to implement the plan put in place. For retirement assets, that transition can present particular challenges.
An attorney may draft accumulation or conduit trusts and assist with beneficiary designations, but implementing those arrangements after death requires attention to distribution rules, deadlines, documentation, and the procedures of IRA custodians and retirement plan administrators. Beneficiaries, trustees, and estate representatives may encounter practical obstacles that were not apparent during the planning process.

This webinar brings together two complementary perspectives: that of an estate planning attorney and that of a retirement benefits consultant whose practice focuses on the technical and operational rules for IRAs and employer retirement plans. Together, Vanessa Kanaga and Denise Appleby will explore how planning decisions affect administration after death and what practitioners can do to help the intended arrangements work in practice.
The program will begin with key considerations at the planning and administration stages, followed by three client hypotheticals. Each discussion will connect the planning objectives with the steps, documentation, and financial institution procedures involved in implementation.
Attendees are encouraged to submit questions in advance to [email protected]. The program will also include live audience questions.
