SUMMARY:ILS Speaker Series: Thirty-One Flavors of SLATs
DESCRIPTION:View Recording\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Webinar Description \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Spousal Lifetime Access Trusts (SLATs) have been part of the estate planning lexicon for years\, but SLATs don’t come in just one flavor. Every SLAT is an irrevocable trust with the trust creator’s spouse as the primary beneficiary\, giving the spouse access to trust assets during lifetime\, but similarities end there. Each SLAT can – and should –  be unique\, with optional provisions included based on the client situation. Extensive options not only differentiate trusts to avoid the Reciprocal Trust Doctrine\, but also allow nearly unlimited flexibility in SLAT design. \n In this webinar\, frequent commentators Jonathan Blattmachr and Martin Shenkman will discuss different features that can be added to SLATs. Some are designed to enhance the spouse’s access\, address future changes in circumstances\, bolster creditor protection\, add income tax planning flexibility\, and more. The speakers will also show how drafting software facilitates SLAT creation with multiple options available at the click of a mouse.  Options we’ll discuss include: \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Lifetime and testamentary powers of appointment (at least 4 variations)\n Mechanisms to avoid inadvertent estate inclusion (at least 4 variations)\n Different mechanisms to trigger estate inclusion if circumstances change (at least 2 variations)\n Provisions to protect a SLAT that is later deemed to be self-settled by the grantor or the grantor’s spouse (many variations)\n Options to plan for early death of the spouse beneficiary (several)\n Making the SLAT a grantor trust (or not) (many variations)\n Planning for possible future marital discord (and for a new spouse) (several variations)\n Adding extra beneficiaries to reduce overall income taxation (so many variations)\n \n \n \n SLAT drafters can combine options in multiple ways\, resulting in far more than 31 flavors. Join us to review a plethora of SLAT design possibilities and when each might make sense for your clients. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n InterActive Legal Speaker Series Presents \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Jonathan G. We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause\, and hope to see you at the rescheduled event. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n	\n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n Webinar Description \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Please join us for the next installment in the InterActive Legal Speaker Series on a topic that may be foreign to some of us – expatriation. Clients are becoming more interested in this topic\, and this presentation will focus on the tax implications in detail. \n In this webinar\, attorney Sebastian Orozco will provide a detailed examination of U.S. tax issues affecting individuals who expatriate under the framework of Section 877A of the Internal Revenue Code and the newly finalized Section 2801 regulations.  He’ll outline the definitions and criteria for classification as a covered expatriate\, and the resulting tax consequences\, including the mark-to-market exit tax regime\, the treatment of pre-expatriation gifting\, and beneficial interests in trusts.   \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n We’ll learn about compliance requirements\, such as dual-status tax returns and Form 8854—including some of the penalties for non-compliance. Special attention will be given to the treatment of deferred compensation\, nongrantor trusts\, and tax-deferred accounts\, offering practical guidance for navigating the final year of U.S. tax residency. \n The materials also will explore strategic planning opportunities for long-term residents who are considering expatriation\, including treaty-based residency elections and pre-expatriation gifting strategies. The implications of the Section 2801 tax on covered gifts and bequests will be covered\, detailing how the tax is calculated\, reported\, and enforced. Examples will illustrate the tax treatment of distributions from domestic and foreign nongrantor trusts\, and the complexities that surround them. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n InterActive Legal Speaker Series Presents \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Sebastian Orozco Segrera \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Webinar Tips \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n After registering\, you will receive a confirmation email containing information about joining the webinar.\n Please note that space is limited in the live broadcast\, and we therefore recommend that you join early.
